How FOSS Started

Friends of Seacoast Shores (FOSS) began in 2015 as an informal gathering of neighbors, first meeting in the kitchen of longtime resident Ed Moritz. The group originally came together in response to policies implemented by the Seacoast Shores Association, Inc. (SSAI), including a “beach police” program at Bayside Beach that denied children access to the neighborhood beach. The Town of Falmouth ultimately issued a cease-and-desist order against these activities. (See, 2015 CapeNews article) [1] In addition, SSAI adopted practices such as submitting invoices for past due association fees: interfering with home sales and refinancing, and creating improper property designations affecting owners’ rights.

FOSS membership is broad and diverse. It includes residents who volunteered and generously contributed financially to SSAI for years, families with multi-generational ties to the community, and homeowners who purchased clubhouse “investment shares” in the belief they were supporting improvements and access for the entire neighborhood. Growing concerns, including SSAI’s threatened sale of Bayside Beach in 2014, the beach police program, efforts to impose perpetual liens on property, and interference with homeowners’ financing and sales transactions, collectively strengthened support for FOSS.

For the past decade, FOSS members have worked to protect the legal rights and shared interests of Seacoast Shores homeowners while promoting transparency, fairness, and a vision of community rooted in mutual respect. In October 2023, the group formally incorporated as Friends of Seacoast Shores, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to advocacy, education, access and a sustainable community.
